Expanding Cabinet Of Dr. Bhattarai Without Women

Issue 37, September 11, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

September 5, 2011: Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has expanded his cabinet adding 13 more ministers yesterday. Only one of them is a woman despite the demand of the women for 33% of women in his cabinet. Most probably the UDMF leaders have no women candidates but the UCPN-Maoist has. So, the question is why only one woman from the UCPN-Maoist has an opportunity of being in the cabinet of Dr. Bhattarai.

We don’t see the possibility of the new cabinet taking any drastic measures to improve the functioning of the administration, as the UDFM has put forward the same old faces that have the history of long political background of good for nothing.

Dr. Bhattarai’s colleague Narayankaji Shrestha ‘Prakash’ got the office of the deputy prime minister with the portfolio of foreign ministry. Shrestha ‘Prakash’ has set the record of being a deputy prime minister for 13 days in the previous cabinet.

Not only Mr. Shrestha ‘Prakash’ has set the record of being a minister for 13 days in the previous regime but his colleagues Top Bahadur Rayamajhi and Barsha Man Pun among others have also done the same thing. But they are again in the cabinet of Dr. Bhattarai.

Are these guys not greedy for power? Why does the UCPN-Maoist send the same faces to the cabinet repeatedly? Does it not have any other capable persons to sit in the chairs of ministers? Another question is why the UCPN-Maoist does not send women to join in the cabinet of Dr. Bhattarai?
