Tibetans suspended protests against China in Nepal but Continue Elsewhere

Issue 14, April 06, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

"We have called off our anti-China protest in Kathmandu in view of the upcoming elections in Nepal," said Thupden Tenzing Jamphel, chairman of the Nepal Tibetan Volunteer Youth for Free Tibet group on April 04, 2008. The Government of Nepal has announced a five-day national holiday for holding a peaceful election for a Constituent Assembly on April 10. So, it is wise to postpone any kind of rallies and protests to give the way for a peaceful election in Nepal.

On Wednesday, April 02, 2008, in a press conference held at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu, Chinese Envoy to Nepal Zheng Xialing strongly requested the Government of Nepal for stopping any protest against China, and preventing 'Free Tibet‘ from operating in Nepal. The Chinese Ambassador said that the violence in Lhasa was carefully schemed and organized by overseas 'Free Tibet’ groups aiming at sabotaging the Beijing Olympics.

At the same time, Tibetans elsewhere have continued their protest against the Chinese occupation of Tibet. In China, the Chinese occupation forces killed several Tibetan protestors on April 04, 2008. A Tibetan student and 30 Filipino supporters staged a rally outside the Chinese consulate in the Philippines on Friday, April 04, 2008, to protest China's crackdown in Tibet according to ‘Global Nation’. The protesters spread out banners saying "Free Tibet Now," "Stop Military Suppression in Tibet," and "Respect Human Rights in Tibet" at the consulate in the Makati City.
