Called Off Shutdown of International Airport

On November 3, 2009, leaders of the United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-Maoist) have called off their program on shutting down the international airport in Kathmandu in response to the call of the international community in Kathmandu. Members of the international community have met with Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda and have urged him to refrain from programs such as shutdown of the international airport at the time when the number of tourists visiting Nepal and in view of the possible damage would be done by the shutdown of the airport to the national economy. The international community has urged leaders of all political parties to work on the consensus politics.

Recently, Nepal has been declared one of the top ten tourist destinations. Nepalis engaged in the tourism industry have been worried about the possible adverse impact of the Maoists’ movement on the tourism. The tourist arrival has increased significantly this year. Hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara have been heavily booked.

Deputy Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has said that the declaration of People’s Republic is a symbolic one and is not for setting up a parallel government, and has also said that the capture of the Dhankuta municipality by the Maoists’ cadres is against the principles of his party.

At the same time, the government of Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has alerted the security forces in view of the need for safeguarding the lives and properties of the people in course of the Maoists’ movement.
