Export Of Pashmina In Decline

Issue 13, March 31, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

March 27, 2013: Export of Nepali pashmina has been dropped almost by 90 per cent during the last 12 years. Pashmina is woolen shawls. Delicate wool of the Nepalese mountain goats called ‘Chyangra’ is used for weaving pashmina. Even with the decline in export, Nepal exported Rs.1.9 billion worth of pashmina in the fiscal year 2011, according to the news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’ of today.

In the first seven months of the current fiscal year 2012, export of Nepali pashmina declined by 4.9 per cent to Rs.1.22 billion, said Pushpa Man Shrestha: president of Nepal Pashmina Industry Association (NPIA). Even the registration of its trademark ‘Chyangra Pashmina’ in 42 countries did not help its export. It was due to the lack of fund to promote the trademark. President of NPIA Shrestha said, “We are unable to promote the trademark in home and abroad due to lack of fund and the trademark will have no meaning until it is promoted in all the 42 countries.”

President of NPIA Shrestha said that his association has repeatedly ask the government to provide it with funding to promote the trademark but the government has not listened to it so far. Rs 100 million were essential for the promotion of the trademark. “The government should allocate the fund if it really wants to increase the export and reduce the mounting trade deficit of the country,” President of NPIA Shrestha said.

Nepal had exported pashmina to the tune of Rs.10 billion in 2000. Nepal could recover its lost export potential if the government of Nepal supported to promote the trademark. The joint effort of the government and the association has introduced the trademark in more than 42 countries in a year, said President of NPIA Shrestha
