Matrika Prasad Yadav Taking Oath in Maithili
By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu
The Maoists rejoined the Government of Nepal in the aftermath of declaration of Nepal a federal democratic republic by the Interim Legislature on December 29, 2007. One of the Maoist leaders, Matrika Prasad Yadav missed the oath-taking ceremony held for his colleagues a few days ago, as he was out of Kathmandu. On Wednesday, January 02, 2008, he took the oath of the office from the Prime Minister with some skirmishes. Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala handed out a sheet of paper with the oath in Nepali language. He however refused to take the oath in that language saying it is the ‘khas’ language. So, he wanted to take the oath in Maithili spoken in Terai. He said that all languages spoken in Nepal are Nepalese languages, and every Nepalis should have an opportunity to take the oath in the language s/he speaks. However, Prime Minister Koirala wanted him to take the oath in the language written in the sheet; Yadav refused it. Prime Minister Koirala gave in and let Yadav translate it into Maithili and take the oath.
