Subhash Nemwang CA Chairman

Issue 30, July 27, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On July 24, 2008, the Constituent Assembly (CA) unanimously elected two-times former Speaker Subhash Chandra Nemwang as its Chairman. The Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist and Leninist (CPN-UML) put up Nemwang for the chairman on Wednesday, July 23, 2008. The tripartite coalition of Nepali Congress (NC), CPN-UML, and Madheshi People’s Rights Forum (MPRF) has made a deal on allocating the portfolio of the Chairman of the CA to the CPN-UML while the portfolios of president and vice-president go to NC and MPRF respectively on the hurriedly held negotiations on July 19, 2008 just before the election for president and vice-president was held.

Some political analysts believe the election of Nemwang for the CA Chair is the clear indication of all 25 political parties reaching consensus on the choice of the CA chairman. However, the fact is that the tripartite coalition has the majority vote; so, no other candidate has any chance of getting elected to the CA Chair standing against Nemwang.
