Eighth Convention Of NEFIN In Chitwan

Issue 20, May 19, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

May 12, 2013: the eighth National Convention of Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) started off in Chitwan yesterday. Representatives and observers from 71 districts out of 75 across the country are participating in the convention. The two-day convention will elect 14-member secretariat of the NEFIN for the next five years.

Vice-president Permananda Jha was supposed to open the convention but he did not show up at the convention. Family members of two indigenous people who attained martyrdom during the movements of indigenous communities lighted the inauguration lamp, according to nepalnews.com.

Four indigenous leaders such as Chandra Bikram Rai, Naresh Tamrakar, Nagendra Kumal and Nityananda Tajpuriya are running for the president of NEFIN, and Dandu Sherpa, Lokraj Limbu and Nabin Rokka are running for the general secretary of NEFIN in the elections to be held during the convention.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony, senior CPN-UML leader Prithivi Subba Gurung expressed objection to the attempts made by some people on defaming the indigenous movement by accusing it of trying to break up the communal harmony in the country, according to nepalnews.com.

“The indigenous movement should not be misunderstood as a campaign against any particular caste or community,” said Gurung, “it was started with the clear objective to fight against unitary structure of the state and those who perceive federalism as a problem.”

Speaking at the same ceremony, UCPN-Maoist leader Barshaman Pun regretted that the inability of political parties to reach an agreement on creation of ethnic identity-based federal states and provinces resulted into the failure of the Constituent Assembly promulgating a new constitution. “Now we should not miss another opportunity that has come to us to draft the constitution,” he said.

Similarly, Nepali Congress leader Indra Bahadur Gurung called on all indigenous communities to unite to press for ethnic identity-based federalism, nepalnews.com writes.
