By KTM Metro Reporter

December 22, 2010: legendary second-world war warrior Havildar Lachhiman Gurung VC that had single-handedly fought against the Japanese aggressors and killed 87 Japanese soldiers around his bunker in 1945, passed away at his last home in England. His final funeral rites will be held today according to the state-run newspaper ‘The Rising Nepal’.

“He received the famous British Gallantry Award, the Victoria Cross (VC), for the staunch defense of his position in Taungdaw, Burma on the night of 12/13 May 1945. Rifleman Gurung was manning the most forward position which bore the brunt of an attack by at least 200 of the Japanese enemy, the British Embassy in its press statement released today said. Twice he hurled back grenades that had fallen in his trench, but the third exploded in his hand. Alone and disregarding his wounds, he loaded and fired his rifle for four hours, calmly beating off each attack in turn. Afterwards, it was reported that there were 87 dead Japanese around his position, with 31 lying at the mouth of his trench. His outstanding gallantry, in the face of overwhelming odds, was the main factor in the defeat of the enemy," ‘The Rising Nepal’ quotes the British embassy statement.
