Indian Consular SD Mehata In Nepalese Political Turbulence

Issue 21, May 20, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

May 18, 2012: according to the local media, Indian Consular Officer S D Mehta located in the Nepalese southern town Birgunja has told the Madheshi leaders at a cocktail party held at the Hotel Vishuwa on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 to prepare for a fiery Madheshi movement for ‘one Madhesh’, as splitting Madhesh is as bad as breaking up one’s own heart.

However, the Indian embassy in Kathmandu has said that the media report quoting the Indian Consular Officer in Birgunja is not true. “India remains committed to supporting the constitution-making process for the establishment of a stable, democratic and prosperous Nepal and will cooperate in the manner determined exclusively by the people and leadership of Nepal,” the statement said according to nepalnews.com.

The Madheshi leaders belonging to NC and CPN-UML have brought the Indian Consular officer’s statement to the public. Obviously, the Indian consular did not recognize some of the Madheshi politicians attending his cocktail party actually belong to the NC and CPN-UML that have been deadly against ‘one Madhesh.’

Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda has called Indian ambassador to Nepal Jayant Prasad to his residence and asked him about the statement of the Indian consular in Nepal coming to light in the media; the envoy has assured Chairman Prachanda of taking a look at the media report according to the news posted on nagariknews.com.

Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal has demanded the government to send the Indian consular officer back home immediately for his controversial statement made to the Nepalis Madheshi leaders in Birgunj as punishment.

Deputy Prime Minster holding the portfolio of Foreign Affairs Narayankaji Shrestha has told the reporters that the Foreign Ministry is serious about the reported statement of the Indian consular officer in Birgunj, and the Foreign Ministry will ask the explanations from the Indian embassy in Kathmandu.

Some lawmakers belonging to NC, CPN-UML and UDMF have demanded the government immediately expelling the Indian consular in Birgunj for his reported statement to launch a movement for keeping Madheshi in one piece.

On May 15, 2012, the three parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML have reached a deal on 11 provinces without names and geographical boundaries provoking a strong opposition from the leaders of the Madheshi alliance: UDMF. They have even obstructed the House session demanding the annulment of the deal on May 17, 2012.
