Bala Chaturdashi Today In Nepal

Issue 51, December 16, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 12, 2012: today is the day called Bala Chaturdashi: the day Nepalis go to the shrines of Lord Shiva to sprinkle seven kinds of seeds believing that the souls of dead parents or relatives get relief from any sorts of travel hurdles on the way to the world of the dead.

So hundreds of people went to Gaushala yesterday to spend overnight there so that they could go sprinkling seven kinds of seeds on the way to different shrines of different gods and goddess including Lord Pashupati: another name of Lord Shiva. Most of the people gathered there spent the night singing hymns and so on but some spent night singing modern songs, drinking and dancing.

Today early morning, people have started off going around the temples of Lord Pashupati in Kathmandu, and around the temples of Lord Shiva elsewhere in Nepal sprinkling seven kinds of seeds on the day. This is one of the traditions of Nepalis for revering the dead souls and loved ones.
