Gacchedar’s Explanation Of Recruiting Soldiers From Madheshi Youths

December 24, 2011: as the discussion on the government’s decision on recruiting 3,000 soldiers from among the Madheshi youths for the Nepal Army has heated up in the Nepalese media and among the political leaders, Deputy Prime Minister Bijya Gacchedar holding the portfolio of Defense has held a press conference at the Ministry of Defense yesterday and explained to the reporters that the Nepalese media and political leaders have been wrongly stating that the 3,000 soldiers from the Madheshis would be recruited in bulk to the Nepal Army; the government has made a decision on recruiting 3,000 soldiers from among the people dwelling in Terai based on the standard competitive practice following the policy of making the Nepal Army inclusive, ‘gorkhapatra’ of today reports.
At the same time, General Secretary of Chure Bhavar Ekata Party Bhumiraj Niraula and parliamentarian Badri Gautam jointly filed a petition at the Supreme Court of Nepal for revoking the policy of making the Nepal Army an inclusive stating the government’s decision on recruiting soldiers from the Madheshi community violate the provision made for the equality in the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007, ‘gorkhapatra’ of today writes.
Yesterday, speaking at the function of releasing a new book, Minister for Information and Communication Jayaprakash Prasad Gupta has said that the government’s decision on recruiting soldiers from the Madheshi youths in bulk for the Nepal Army would not be reversed at any cost; and charged the NC and CPN-UML leaders with having duel characters, as they have been talking about the state restructuring but at the same time they have been opposing the government’s decision on the rights of Madheshis, ‘gorkhapatra’ of today writes.
Speaking at an interaction event held in Kathmandu yesterday, Minister for Irrigation Mahendra Prasad Yadav has said that the government’s decision on recruiting soldiers from the Madheshi youths would not be changed, and the government would enforce it at any cost; so, he has urged the political leaders not to indulge in unnecessary comments on this matter, ‘gorkhapatra’ of today writes.
Speaking at the same interaction event, Nepali Congress CWC member Arjun Narshing KC has said that the government’s decision on recruiting soldiers from the Madhesi youths in bulk for the Nepal Army is irresponsible one and it would adversely affect the peace process and the constitution writing.
