Celebrating Dashain Festival In Nepal

Issue 42, October 17, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

October 16, 2010: Today is the last day of Navarat: the nine-night festival. On this night, Goddess Durga Bhavani has defeated the demon called Mahisashur and eliminated the evils from the world. Nepalis emulate the victory of Goddess over the demon sacrificing thousands of male buffaloes, goats, sheep, ducks, and roosters believing the demonic spirits have gone hiding in those animals and fowls.

On this night, tantric priests make special offerings to Goddess Durga Bhavani at the temple specially built for the Goddess to make offerings during the Dashain festival in Kathmandu. In Bhaktapur on this night, tantric priests make special offerings to nine Goddesses called Nava Durga.

On Sunday, October 17, 2010, Nepalis celebrate the victory day wearing red tika on the foreheads. Seniors bless the juniors offering red tike on the foreheads. So, you find Nepalis wearing forehead full of red tika. They continue to receive blessings from the seniors until the full moon day: the last day of the 15-day Dashain festival. Red tika is the mixture of rice, vermilion and yogurt offered to Goddess Durga Bhavani.
