Extending Deadline For Submitting Names For Proportional Representation

Issue 50, December 15, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 11, 2013: the Election Commission (EC) has extended the deadline for submitting the names of candidates for the Proportional Representation (PR) by eight days, according to the RSS news on ‘gorkhapatraonlie.com’.

In a press statement released yesterday, the EC informed about it. The previous deadline expired yesterday.

On December 3, the EC allocated the 335 PR seats to different 30 parties following the votes they received in the elections. Each political party needs to select a list of names from among the names each party submitted for the number of seats each is entitled following the votes.

Chairman of RPP-Nepal Kamal Thapa has auctioned the 24 seats his party has received for the PR, and gave the seats to the people that bided the highest amounts for the seats, according to the local media.

Seventeen central committee members of RPP-Nepal have filed a complaint at the Election Commission (EC) against the party's chairperson Kamal Thapa stating Thapa haphazardly submitted the list of Proportional Representation (PR) nominees to the EC. "The Constituent Assembly (CA) election ordinance clearly mentions that the PR list has to be finalized by majority of the party's central committee," said Prahlad Sah, central assistant general secretary of RPP-N yesterday, according to 'nepalnews.com.'

UCPN-Maoist has been refusing to submit the names of its members for the 54 seats it has received following the PR votes it has received. UCPN-Maoist is demanding to set up a high-level commission on investigation into irregularities in the elections held on November 19.
