Kathmandu: Department of Transport issued a route permission to a transport company called Mayur Transport to run bus service on the Kathmandu-Banepa-Panauti route since last week. Mayur Company has buses with comfortable seats and has set the bus fare as prescribed by the Department of Transport.
Several bus companies forming a syndicate on the Kathmandu-Banepa-Panauti have vehemently opposed the Department of Transport issuing the route permit on their monopoly route, and threatened to stop bus services and did stop running buses on this route for a day or two, and attempted to stop the Mayur buses running on this route but the armed police escorting the buses foiled their attempts.
After finding no alternative to accept the Mayur buses running on this route, other transport companies reduced the bus fare and try to be competitive with the new company running buses.
The Department of Transport has instructed its branches across the country to issue route permits to new bus companies so that a number of bus companies will be running buses on various routes competitively.
Probably, the syndicates of truck transporters’ companies will also breakup once the Department of Transport issues other truck companies to run trucks for transporting goods. Thus, the syndicates are crumbling for the benefits of the commuters and for other companies wiling to run transport businesses.
