Election Commission Becoming Without Commissioners

Issue 46, November 11, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 7, 2012: soon, the Election Commission (EC) would be without Chief Commissioner and commissioners, too, as the term of office of the Acting Chief Commissioner Nilkantha Upreti came to an end today, and the senior most Commissioner Dolakh Bahadur Gurung would take the office of the Acting Chief of Election commission tomorrow, writes RSS.

According to Spokesperson for the EC Sharada Prasad Trital, Commissioner Gurung would take the office of the Acting Chief Commissioner of the EC on the basis of seniority following the Remuneration of Constitutional Body Officials Act.

The Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007 has made a provision for a Chief Commissioner and four Commissioners for the EC to run. Currently, two commissioners are left. After Gurung taking the office of the Acting Chief of Election Commissioner, only one commissioner would be left.

Following the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007, the government makes recommendations of the candidates for the offices of various independent bodies such as Election Commission, Public Service Commission, and so on, then the parliament appoints them endorsing the recommendations. In absence of a parliament, the government has not been able to do so.
