Newsprints Held At Kolkata Port
By KTM Metro Reporter
June 24, 2010: all Nepalese media organizations and other related organizations have condemned India for holding 1,000 tons of newsprints imported by the Kantipur publications from Korea and Canada since May 27, 2010 on the pretext of the need for investigation.
On June 23, 2010, ‘The Kathmandu Post’ in English and ‘Kantipur’ in Nepali have carried the detailed news about the newsprints held by the Indian authorities. These newspapers have stated that holding of newsprints imported by the Nepalese company at the Kolkata seaport by the Indian authorities even goes against the Nepal-India Trade and Transit Treaty.
Reacting immediately to the news reports the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has released a statement saying the Indian authorities have simply held those newsprints for investigation and the highly exaggerated news reports in ‘The Kathmandu Post’ and ‘Kantipur’ will not help in early investigation into the newsprints.
Some Nepalese legislators have stated that the Indian authorities have been holding the
Newsprints at the Indian seaport in revenge for the nationalistic views the Nepalese publications have held so far and the detailed reports on the machine-readable passports these newspapers have carried.
At the same time, the legislative Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has served subpoena to Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala, Minister for Commerce and Supplies Rajendra Mahato and secretaries to the two ministries to inquire about the government’s initiative to early release of 1,000 tons of newsprints held at Kolkata port for about a month.
