Subsidized Fertilizers Not Reaching Khotang

Issue 03, January 17, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

January 11, 2010, the government-run Radio Nepal in its program called ‘Good Governance’ on January 10 has revealed that the government has not transported the subsidized fertilizers to Khotang one of the hill districts in Nepal at the time when the farmers need the fertilizers to apply in their wheat and potato crops. However, the farmers can buy fertilizers at the private stores at the market prices, which are almost twice the prices of subsidized fertilizers. In the current fiscal year 2009 (2066), the government has appropriated more than one billion rupees for subsiding fertilizers.

Some farmers have opined that after the agricultural season, the government agency transports the fertilizers to the district and finding none of the farmers are buying fertilizers then it secretly sells the subsidized fertilizers to the private storeowners and pocket the subsidy on fertilizers.

The current government headed by flunky Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has reintroduced the subsidy on fertilizers in the current fiscal year obviously for making money for his people. After persistent efforts for decades, the international community has succeeded to stop the government from giving subsidy on fertilizers, as it has been one of the tools for corruption in the administration. Madhav Nepal has reintroduced the tool again.
