Fixing the Split of Eight-Party Alliance

By KTM Metro Reporter

The state-run newspaper ‘The Rising Nepal’ of September 18, 2007 reported that the possibility of finding a mid-way to the stalemate reached between the CPN-Maoist and the seven parties is still there despite Interim Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala rejecting the Maoists' demand for declaring the country republic and an election system for proportional representation of all Nepalis in the CA, said Prakash, General Secretary of CPN-Unity Center Masal. He told ‘The Rising Nepal’ that he tried to forge understanding on five other demands of the Maoists besides, republic and proportional representation in the CA during his meeting with the Prime Minister on Monday, September 17, 2007. The five demands were forming a commission on investigation into disappeared people, providing relief to the families of the Maoists who died during the conflict, provision of Rs. 3,000 to the Maoist combatants lodged in the cantonments as agreed earlier, removal of the army from the palace and taking actions against those people indicted by the Rayamajhi Commission. Prakash said the Prime Minister declined to take actions against those indicted by the Rayamajhi Commission, especially the security personnel. He, however, said there can be talks on the removal of the army from the palace. "The Prime Minister was also positive on the other three demands," said Prakash.
