By KTM Metro Reporter

November 13, 2012: in a press statement released by the President’s office yesterday, Head of State President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav wishes the Nepalese people for the Nepal Sambat (1133) paving the way of peace and prosperity according to ‘HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE.’ Nepalis are celebrating the Nepalese New Year 1133 on November 14 following the Nepal Samvat calendar.

In the message to the nation today on the occasion of the Nepal Samvat 1133, Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai wishes all Nepalis for the New Year 1133 establishing the social goodwill and equality among all the people and respect for the poor; and said that the Nepal Samvat is an indigenous calendar that has helped maintain religious tolerance and social harmony among all the people in the country according to the state-run news agency RSS.

All Nepalis follow the Nepal Samvat calendar for holding the religious and social events in Nepal and abroad. It is a lunar calendar, and is dovetailed with the Vikram calendar for all Nepalis to make it easy to use. The despotic Rana rulers had introduced the Vikram calendar about 150 years ago.

Inaugurating a cultural rally held by the Nhudan Gwasa Khala Madhyapur Thimi on the eve of the Nepal Samvat 1133 in Madhyapur Thimi today, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology Dr Keshav Man Shakya said that the Nepal Samvat symbolizes the emancipation of all the oppressed people, as a businessman called Sankhadhar Sakhwa paid off the debts of all people to introduce it.

The then Interim Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai had bestowed on Sankhadhar Sakhwa the title of a national hero in Mangsir 2056 (1999) BS in recognition of his contribution to introducing the Nepal Samvat by paying the debts of all indebted people.

Former Prime Minister Prachanda had recognized the Nepal Samvat as a national calendar in Kartik 2065 BS (2008).
