Arresting Human Rights Activists In Nepal

Issue 42, October 14, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

October 7, 2012: Police arrested human rights activists sitting in at the official residence of the Prime Minister today morning for peacefully protesting against the recent promotion of Colonel Raju Basnet allegedly involved in the human rights violence to the Brigadier General, writes Npelanews.com/thehimalayantimes.com.

On October 4, 2012, the government led by Dr, Baburam Bhattarai promoted Colonel Raju Basnet to the Brigadier General even though he was implicated in serious human rights violence for causing the enforced disappearance of 49 Maoists from the Bhairabnath Battalion at Maharajgunj, Kathmandu when he was commander of this battalion.

Several national and international human rights watchdogs such as Nepal Human Rights Commission, Human Rights Alliance, Human Rights Watch, International Commission of Jurists and Amnesty International have swiped the government for promoting the colonel Basnet allegedly involved in the human rights violence.

On July 20, 2012, the UNHCHR in Geneva also had bashed the government for trying to promote Colonel Raju Basnet to Brigadier General. However, even the government of Dr. Bhattarai needed to bow down to the Nepal Army promoting such an human rights abuser.
