Called For Explanations from CoAF Katuwal

Issue 17, April 26, 2009

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On April 21, 2009, speaking to the anchor of the state-run Radio Nepal’s morning program called ‘Antar Sambad’, Spokesman for the Government of Nepal Krishna Bahadur Mahara said that the Defense Ministry has asked the Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Rukumangad Katuwal on April 20, 2009 for explanations for violation of the order of the government in three accounts such as the government has specially written to the CoAS to stop new recruitments as it went against the Comprehensive Peace Agreement the government has signed with the Maoist but the CoAS ignored it, the Defense Ministry did not extend the terms of eight brigadier generals however, the CoAS reinstated them after the Supreme Court of Nepal issued a stay-order, and the Nepal Army players under the instructions of the CoAS boycotted the Fifth National Games the members of the People’s Liberation Army have participated in.

Spokesperson Mahara said that whether the Defense Ministry would fire the CoAS or not depends on what explanations he would submit to the government. He also told the Nepal–Radio anchor that the NC leaders opposing any actions taken by the government for taking the peace process to the conclusive end has made room for doubts whether the NC leaders have been really for a lasting peace or for disrupting the ongoing peace process.

The NC parliamentarians boycotted the parliamentary session on April 20, 2009 protesting the explanations the government has sought from the CoAS. However, they continued to collect the allowances paid by the taxpayers’ money. They had previously opposed any actions taken by the government concerning the Nepal Army.

The Prime Minister went to the official resident of the President for informing him about the explanations the Government has sought from the CoAS for violations of the government’s orders.
