Opposition Coalition Set To Launch Protests

Issue 46, November 11, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 10, 2012: the opposition coalition of NC and CPN-UML has announced a protest to topple the current legitimately elected government to set up another illegitimate government: a so-called consensus unity government. Any logical person could not believe such an undemocratic action of the so-called democratic parties.

The people have recently reinstated democracy and given a mandate to the political parties to promulgate a new constitution but the opposition coalition instead of materializing the people’s aspirations for institutionalizing the democratic setup, has indulged in such an undemocratic protest.

“Our agitation against the government will continue until the Prime Minister resigns to pave the way for a government of national consensus,” said Chairman CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal. “Fresh election to the Constituent Assembly is the only way out of the political crisis. Only a government of national unity can conduct such election.” “UCPN (M) is trying to impose a totalitarian regime on the Nepali people. There is no alternative to agitation,” said NC Vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel, writes nepalnews.com.

Such statements of the so-called leaders echoed nothing but the strong desire for grabbing the power, and expression of the pain of being out of power. However, it remains to be seen whether such movement of the opposition coalition would be able to dislodge the government or not; if the opposition could then at what cost to the nation.

The question is whether sincere Nepalis would believe such statements or not remains to be seen. The opposition coalition is set to spend its resources and time on such undemocratic means of grabbing power. Their democratic actions would be less costly to regain the power if they follow the rule of law and the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007.

Spokesman for the UCPN-Maoist accused the opposition coalition of inviting confrontation by launching a protest; and said that however, the government would not bow to the opposition demand for the resignation of the prime minister but would go to any extent for building a consensus on all the disputed matters.

At the same time, Chairman of UCPN-Maoist has started working intensively on building a consensus on the budget to be presented to the head of state by the next week. The opposition coalition has been not for cooperating on anything as long as the current government is in power but the ruling coalition is not willing to quit the office.
