Former US President Carter Met With Political Leaders Including Mohan Vaidhya

April 1, 2013: former US President Jimmy Carter Met with the Nepalese political leaders including Mohan Vaidhya to have their opinions of the possibility of holding elections in June. Nepalese political leaders went to see US President Carter at the Dwarika Hotel in Kathmandu.

 

Former US President Carter Met with Nepalese former prime ministers such as Prachanda, Dr Baburam Bhattarai, Jhalanath Khanal and Madhav Nepal one after another at the Dwarika hotel. They assured the former US president of the possibility of holding elections in June.

 

Chairman of CPN-Maoist-Vaidhya Mohan Vaidhya also went to see the former US president at the Dwarika hotel. He presented his version of not possibility of holding elections until the four major political parties would not break their monopoly on making decisions on the matters of the national importance.

 

Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda informed former US president Carter that the transitional period was to be over soon as the country had geared up for the elections following the consensus forged among main political parties. He also said that the UCPN-Maoist had played a vital role in ending the political crisis. Former US president Carter lauded the role of UCPN-Maoist in building a political consensus, and said that its role would be important in making the Constituent Assembly (CA) elections successful as well, according to the news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’ of today.

 

After the meeting with Former US President Carter, President of NC Sushil Koirala said, “We informed him that all political parties were committed to fresh polls, federalism and sufficient inclusion in the CA and that the parties are planning to hold talks with dissident political groups to clear obstacles,” according to the ‘HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE’ of today.

 

Former US President Carter also met with the Chief Election Commissioner. Chief Election Commissioner Nilakantha Upreti said that former US President Carter was concern with the CA polls’ credibility, legitimacy, fairness and inclusion of different deprived and underprivileged groups, according to the ‘HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE’ of today.

 

Former US President Carter is the president of the Carter Center. He has opened the branch of the Carter Center in Nepal. The Carter Center has been in Nepal to institutionalize the rule of law and democratic principles.
