Kathmandu International Airport Runway Taking More Loads Than It Can

Issue 34, August 25, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 24, 2013: Nepal Civil Aviation Authority has requested the international airlines particularly the Korean and Thai Airlines for not flying in a large wide body aircrafts as the Kathmandu International Airport Runway has no capacity to take the loads of such aircrafts, according to the news in ‘gorkhapatra’ of August 20, 2013.

The runway has the capacity of 196 tons but the aircrafts of 299 tons have been flying in by the Korean and Thai airlines. The runway weakened by the heavy monsoon rains has be broken several times causing to stop the incoming aircrafts in the air for hours. Repairing of the runway has been almost the nightly business from 12:00 midnight to 6:00 morning when aircrafts don’t come in and go out.

The air traffic also has been considerably increased from 1990. Number of international flights in 1990 was only seven thousand flights but it was increased to 100,000 by 2013 causing tremendous pressure on the runway.

After the monsoon, the government is scheduled for rebuilding the runway to cope with the loads of the large aircrafts and the number of international flights, according to the news.

Some media have been reporting that the government has prohibited the large and wide body aircrafts flying in but the Government of Nepal has denied the prohibition of heavy crafts flying in.

Hotel business people and travel and tour people have been worried about the runway not taking the loads of bigger aircrafts, as it might reduce the number of guests coming to Nepal. In addition, many guests that had booked the flights to Nepal might cancel their bookings.
