Mutiny At Police Battalion in Nepalgunj

Issue 29, July 20, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Not a month has passed since a mutiny at the APF battalion in Nepalgunj, another similar mutiny has had at the Riot Control Police Battalion in Nepalgunj on Saturday, July 12, 2008. The previous mutiny was successful to the mutineers, as the government promised to meet their demands. This time, Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula instructed the top police officer to take strong disciplinary actions against the mutineers.

On Saturday, July 12, 2008, some riot policemen held senior officers hostage at gunpoint at a police battalion in Nepalgunj, Banke district demanding taking actions against corrupt police officials, and protesting against the poor food and ill treatment of policemen by officers. They had fire several rounds of gunshots in air before announcing the mutiny and taking the officers hostage causing alarm among the citizens in the area.

A retired top police officer speaking at the morning program called ‘Antar Sambad’ of the Radio Nepal on July 13, 2008 said that such a mutiny has been repeatedly taking place, as the Home Ministry officials have been using the loyalty to the political party in power rather than following the rules and regulations for making decisions; so, they have not taken actions against the wrong doers but punished the sincere police men; all these are not healthy signs for the newly emerged republic of Nepal.

On July 14, 2008, at about 1:00 A.M. the mutineers surrendered to Dig Bharat G.C. The mutineers are kept at the police-training center, Nepalgunj. The government did not want to talk not to mention negotiations with them. The government is for taking strong actions against the mutineers following the rules and regulations.

Deputy Commander of People’s Liberation Army Janardan Sharma accused the government of politicizing the police, and demanded the government investigate the case of corruption charges and punish the guilty officers according to the morning news of the Radio Nepal of July 14, 2008.
