Fight between Pro-and-against the king people

By KTM Metro Reporter

On September 18, 2007, the crisis in the eight-party alliance has reached the peak after both the parties for and against the republic declaration from the Interim Legislature stuck to their respective stand. The rebel leader Prachanda stood firmly for his demand for the declaration of Nepal a republic before the election for a Constituent Assembly. Similarly, Prime Minister and President of the Nepali Congress Party, Girija Prasad Koirala stood for not declaring Nepal a republic. Some of the leaders of the junior partners of the seven-party alliance, such as General Secretary of the CPN-UML, Madhav Kumar Nepal, and Chairman of the Nepal Workers’ and Peasants’ Party (NWPP), Narayan Man Bijukchhe came out openly in support of not declaring republic before the CA polls clearly taking the side of the pro-king people and going against the Nepalese people’s desire for republic demonstrated in the People’s Movement in April 2006 and the current movement of the Madheshi and ethnic Nepalese people for republic and proportional representation in the CA.

On September 18, 2007, the Maoists have called a mass meeting in Kathmandu at 3:00 PM either to declare a peaceful movement for republic and proportional representation of all Nepalis in a CA or a campaign for the election for a CA depending upon the results of the talks to be held between the Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and the Maoists’ Chairman Prachanda in the morning of September 18.

The Prime Minister said that if the Interim Legislature declared Nepal a republic the international community might not recognize it. However, he did not disclose the international community that would not accept the Nepalese people’s verdict. During the recent visit to Nepal, Indian Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon said to the reporters that whatever would be the verdict of the Nepalese people on the issue of republic and the monarchy would be acceptable to the Indian government. So, there is no question of Indian government not recognizing the republic declared by the Interim Legislature.

The Radio Nepal in its news at 2:00 PM on September 18, 2007 said that the Maoist four Ministers have tendered their resignations to the Prime Minister indicating the failure of the talks between the Prime Minister, seven-party other leaders and the Maoists’ Chairman and his colleagues. However, some leaders of the seven-party alliance said that they would continue to find out a compromise agreement on the demand. Minister for Information and Communication, Krishna Bahadur Mahara said to the Radio Nepal reporter that the talks with the Prime Minister failed; so, they tendered resignations to the Prime Minister. He further said that they had fought for the election for a CA; so, they were not against the election but the election without declaring Nepal a republic would be meaningless.
