June 23, 2011: US President Barack Obama is pulling 33,000 U.S. troops out of the war zone in Afghanistan by September 2012. He will bring back 10,000 troops this year, and 23,000 more by the end of next summer following the timetable set by the military.
He had sent 33,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan in December 2009 to deal with the Taliban and al-Qaeda fugitives.
The United States, NATO and other allies have planned to turn over all the responsibility for the security operations to Afghanistan by the year 2014.
"This is within a framework of the gradual transition of security lead to the Afghans," said White House spokesman Jay Carney. "It's begun already in some places, but it will progress over the next several years," Usatoday.com quotes Jay Carney
