By KTM Reporter in Kathmandu
On behalf of the Government of Nepal, Acting Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala presented a check for Rs 300,000 and a letter of appreciation to 12-year old Kamal Nepali for his brave deed of rescuing a child of two and a half years fallen in a crevice in Pokhara. After the Sagarmatha TV reported a child has fallen in a fissure, a team of the recently opened private rescue agency called “Canyon“ went from Kathmandu to Pokhara but could not rescue the child for 22 hours, as the fissure was so narrow that an adult rescuer could not reach the child. Then, a brave boy called Kamal Nepali did a heroic task of rescuing the child from about 60 ft deep fissure where she had been lying for 22 hours without food and water.
On Saturday, June 28, 2008, the boy was taken on an open car from the office of the Sagarmatha TV at Anamnagar, Kathmandu to the town for a public felicitation. A musical band and school children lead the open car with the boy.
The Sagarmatha TV relentlessly relayed the live felicitation of Kamal: The Brave Boy. Many individuals and agencies showered the boy with many cash gifts and continued to shower him with gifts depositing cash in the account opened in a bank for his benefit. Some schools offered him free education including free food and lodging. Other educational institutions offered him higher education free of cost. One private medical institution offered him free medial treatment throughout his life.
Seeing the brave boy on the Sagarmatha TV, and impressed by his brave deed, a sculptor came with materials and tools from Chitwan to Kathmandu and crafted a sculpture of the boy and presented it to him.
Ganeshman Singh Foundation announced to award the ‘Ganeshman Singh Children Award’ to Kamal Nepali in recognition of his brave deed for this year. The award carries 25,000 rupees cash and will be awarded on the day of the People’s Movement Anniversary.
On June 29, 2008, Prime Minister Koirala gave the check for Rs 300,000 to Kamal Nepali appreciating his courageous deed of saving the life of a toddler fallen in a deep crevice in Pokhara. On the occasion the Prime Minister told Kamal that he wanted to see all of the Nepalese boys were as courageous as Kamal.
On June Tuesday, June 24, 2008, a couple was attending a funeral in Pokhara. A two and a half year toddler followed the parents. Suddenly, the child disappeared. The parents while searching the child heard the voice of the child coming from the deep fissure. The father attempted to rescue the child going down the fissure but could not reach her. He then called on the local police and army for rescue but the police and army too were helpless to do anything, as the child was lying down deep in the narrow crevice.
The news reached the Sagarmatha TV. The TV channel immediately flashed the news. Hearing the news of the child lying deep in a crevice in Pokhara, a team of the recently set up agency called “Canyon” for rescuing mountaineers set off for Pokhara. They used all recently acquired skill in rescuing the child but could not succeeded to rescue her, as the child was lying in such a narrow crevice that an adult could not passed through it.
It has already passed 22 hours since the child has fallen in a fissure. The child has stopped crying and calling the parents. Hope of rescuing the child has been decreasing every hour.
The rescuers came up with the idea of sending a boy that could pass through the crevice and reach the child over there. Kamal Nepali became the first volunteer for rescuing the child.
The rescuers quickly cut the rescue outfit into the size fitting the boy, and attached a pouch to it. They lowered the boy with the help of ropes to the stranded child in the fissure. Kamal reached the child called Aradhana Pradhan and put her into the pouch and brought her back to the surface from about 60 ft deep dark crevice on Wednesday, June 25, 2008. Thus, brave boy Kamal Nepali save one of the so precious human lives, and became an instant boy hero.
