Issue 09, February 27, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

February 26, 2011: working with an INGO called Sky Door Foundation, the Department of Archaeology (DoA) of the Government of Nepal has discovered the remnants of 27 ancient individuals such as adult men, women, adolescents, even children, along with their cows, and a horse buried in caves at 13,800 feet for some 1500 years, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.

Nepalese archaeologist Mohan Singh Lama along with American archeologist and National Geographic grantee Dr. Mark Aldenderfer, and American explorer with The North Face Pete Athans has led the research team. The remote cave complexes have been accessible to the research team only due to the technical high-angle climbing.

With the help of world-class climbers adept at the both rock and crumbling-cliff climbing, the researchers comprising bio-archeologists, art historians and the local people discovered century-old priceless wall painting dated to the 13th C.A.D along with one of the kind Bon manuscripts.

Director General of DoA Bishnu Karki has said that the research proves that the Kali Gandaki river corridor has been an important historical artery to the Silk Route. "We are very excited about the expertise of the Sky Door Team in illuminating the historical significance of this archaeological rich region that has previously been overlooked," he said.
