State Staffs Set To Climb Mount Everest

February 22, 2011: Secretary to the Office of Prime Minister and Council of Ministers Lila Mani Poudel is leading a team of high state officials to climb Mount Everest to draw the attention of the tourists in the Nepal Tourism Year 2011 the government and the people involved in the tourism industry are celebrating to increase the number of tourists visiting Nepal, ‘The Himalayan Times’ writes today quoting the state-run news agency RSS.
The government is spending Rs 750 million on training the team on climbing mountains and then actually climbing Mount Everest. The total number of days the team will be engaged in this campaign is 75 days. The Mountaineering Training Institute has already trained the team and the team has successfully climbed the Yala peak of Lamtang. This Institute in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism will assist the team in reaching the top of Mount Everest.
The fastest developing mountaineering technology has eased climbing of the highest mountain in the world: Everest, and less risky. Mountaineer of even 70 years of age has reached Mount Everest recently. So, our officials used to work at offices and to ride the state-provided vehicles going back and forth between home and office will certainly need to use their physical strength to reach the top of the highest mountain but it is less risky than a motorcycle ride on the streets of Kathmandu.
Members of the team are Joint Secretary to Foreign Ministry Durga Prasad Bhattarai, Joint Secretary to Tourism Ministry Laxman Bhattarai, engineer at the same ministry Santa Kumar Maharjan, and Mukti Ram Rijal, Surath Pokhrel, Hari Prasad Guragain, Khim Lal Gautam, Gyanendra Kumar Shrestha, Tulsi Ram Bhandari, Padma Bahadur Bhandari, Bishnu Prasad Poudel, Subir Shrestha, Hari Dhakal and Kumar Giri as reported in ‘The Himalayan Times’ of today.
