Fraudulent Custom Officials At International Airport In Kathmandu

August 17, 2013: acting on the tip off, the officials of the Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority have arrested two custom officials that have been carrying the amount they have collected as the custom duty, out of the office not depositing it in the State’ revenue account, according to the Radio Nepal news of the today morning.
The regular practice of the custom officials at the international airport in Kathmandu has been that the custom officials collect millions of custom duty but they don’t deposit all the money in the revenue bank account of the State causing billions of revenue loss to the State every year.
The system of collecting the custom duty is faulty at the international airport. It was deliberately designed by the corrupt politicians along with the fraudulent State officials to have a loophole for leaking the money the custom officials collect at the Custom Office. Then, the officials used to share the money thus collected with the politicians and other officials involved in such fraudulent business.
Such things has been happening at the Ministry of Transport that collects vehicle tax but recently the ministry has introduced a system that has made such a fraudulent practice impossible.
The similar system without making any undue difficulties to the custom duty payers should be set in place at the international airport in Kathmandu so that corrupt State officials in cooperation with the politicians and other corrupt higher-up official could not engage in such a fraudulent practice.
