Auctioning Seized Sandalwood

Issue 15, April 11, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

April 10, 2010: the Ministry of Forest has decided to auction the seized sandalwood valued at Rs 47.00 million downgrading the sandalwood. According to the forest experts, the government has downgraded the sandalwood and then set the value of it. Following the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), the government needs to safeguard the endangered species of plants and then turn them over to the country of origin; however, Minister for Forest Deepak Bohara has decided to auction the sandalwood abusing the CITES according to the local media.

Now, it is the turn of Minister Deepak Bohara to abuse his authority of auctioning the forest products for the benefits of a little money after Prime Minister Madhav Nepal and his deputy Sujata Koirala have seriously violated the rule of law for awarding the contract of printing MRPs to the Indian government-owned company obviously for a large money.
