Buying Weapons from India

On July 20, 2009, Home Minister Bidhya Bhandari went to India for an official visit. During the meeting with her Indian counterpart, the Indian Defense Minister has agreed on lifting the embargo on shipping weapons to Nepal from India.

On July 22, 2009, the Prachanda-Madhav telephone talks concerning the import of weapons from India have lasted for an hour according to the morning news aired by the state-run Radio Nepal on July 23, 2009. Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has attempted to convince Former Prime Minister Prachanda of not importing weapons from India but bringing the weapons suspended by the Government of India during the autocratic rule of Former King Gyanendra. However, Prachanda has warned the Prime Minister of grave consequences of the import of weapons.
