May 8, 2012: lives of the people in the far western region have been hell-like during the last 12 days of shutdown of all sorts of business enforced by the Undivided Far-West Unified Society (Akhanda Sudur Paschhim Ekta Samaj) calling for keeping the far western region intact after the UCPN-Maoist proposed to split the far western region into difference provinces.
Speaking to the reporters Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai yesterday said that the shutdown would not give any solution to the problems and urged the protestors to end the shutdown and sit for dialogue, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.
The shutdown has been so effective because the central leaders of major political parties have been not only supporting the protestors but also enticing them to enforce the shutdown of businesses even at night. So, vehicular traffic has come to the total standstill causing tremendous sufferings to the travelers.
During the meeting of the three parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML, the leaders urged the Prime Minister to end the shutdown resolving the problems of the far western region. The Prime Minister told the leaders that the government had already set up a team to talk to the protestors and resolve the shutdown in the far western region.
After Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai formally called them for a dialogue, the protestors held a press conference to state they were ready for talks. "We are ready to hold talks with the government but the talks should be held in the Far-West," said Hari Regmi, communications coordinator of the ongoing Far-West general strike at the press conference according to ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today.
"If the UCPN-Maoist party decided to withdraw their proposal to disintegrate far-west we will call off all our protests," said Bhojraj Bohara, a local leader of Nepali Congress.
Hundreds of passengers coming from Gaddachauki were stranded in Mahendranagar. Though police escorted some vehicles to reach their destinations, the shutdown supporters obstructed the vehicular movement even during the nighttime according to ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today.
