Nepalese Legislature Electing Prime Minister On July 21

Issue 29, July 18, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

July 13, 2010; after the three major political parties such as UCPN-Maoist, NC and CPN-UML could not build a consensus on forming a new government within the extended deadline, the so-called ceremonial President has asked the legislature to elect a Prime Minister by majority votes following the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007, Following the President’s order, the Parliamentary Business Advisory Committee has set July 21 for electing a new Prime Minister.

Rational leaders of the Madheshi political parties have said that they would support the coalition that will work for federalism, peace process and constitution writing. If the Madheshi leaders are true to their words and would not sell to the NC and CPN-UML then they would not support these two parties for forming a new government.

We cannot say anything now, as the buying and selling of legislators are going to be the major political activities until the legislature completes the election for a new Prime Minister on July 21, 2010. The 601-member legislature has many legislators that were defeated in the elections; so, they are not morally bound to the voters and they are free to do anything that benefits them.
