Beware of Regressive Madhav Administration

Issue 32, August 9, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

The state-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of August 8, 2009 has reduced the pages of news published in ethnic languages to a half page from two pages it has used to publish in the past. The ‘Gorkhapatra’ has been publishing news in two languages of ethnic languages spoken in Nepal every day in turn since the Maoist-led government came to power. The ‘Gorkhapatra’ had given a full page to each ethnic language every day. However, after two and a half months of the Madhav administration, the ‘Gorkhapatra’ has gradually reduced the publication of news in different ethnic languages and on August 8, 2009, it has reduced to only a half page of the news published in one of the ethnic languages. Wait and see when the Madhav administration will stop the publication of news in ethnic languages. Thus, the Madhav administration has been making the ‘Gorkhpatra’ from inclusive to exclusive newspaper. It is a matter of concern for all Nepalis wishing to make Nepal an inclusive state.

The Madhav administration has been not much different from the previous panchayat administration that has gradually reduced the Radio programs aired by the state-run Radio Nepal in the Newar language since the Nepalis introduced democracy in 1950s and ultimately stopped the Radio programs in the Newar language in 1970s.
