Prachanda At Press Conference

Issue 30, July 27, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On July 22, 2008, Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-Maoist) held a press conference at its parliamentary office on the premises of Singhadurbar to disclose the decision of its central committee on the recent political development in Nepal.

Speaking to the reporters at the press conference, Chairman Prachanda said that his party has formally decided to remain in the opposition, as it has lost moral ground to form a government after the three-party alliance formed by Nepali Congress (NC), Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist and Leninist (CPN-UML) and Madheshi Peoples’ Rights Forum (MPRF) on July 19, 2008 to defeat its candidates for president, and for vice-president. However, he has not totally ruled out the possibility of the formation of a government if the tripartite coalition is broken up and parties become ready for a consensus government.

Prachanda stated that his party’s progressive and inclusive values and ideals have won after the election for president and vice-president even though the candidates of his party lost the election. He said that he could have agreed to the proposal of the MPRF for vice-president to get his party’s candidate for president elected; it would have hurt the hill people. So, they did not do that." He also said, “we could have immediately accept the candidature of Ram Prit Paswan for president, had the CPN-UML put forward this name instead of Madhav Kumar Nepal.”
