Issue 15, April 08, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

April 3, 2012: the full bench of Justices such as Gauri Bahadur Karki, Om Prakash Mishra and Kedar Prasad Chalise of the Special Court has ruled that Rs 26.88 million worth of the former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Moti Lal Bohara’s property is disproportionate to his sources of income; so convicted him of amassing wealth illegally, sent him to jail for the one-and-half year, and fined him Rs 2.68 million according to the news posted on the nepalnews.com and thehimalayantimes.com.

The Special Court had acquitted IGPs Bohora and Achyut Krishna Kharel stating the limitations of legal provisions made in the law for convicting them of accumulating wealth above their income sources. Challenging the Special Court rulings on the cases, the Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had filed an appeal for reviewing the rulings of the Special Court on not convicting Kharel and Bohora of amassing property without any legitimate source, according to the news posted on nepalnews.com. In November 2011, the Supreme Court had sent the graft cases against former top cops Bohara and Achyut Krishna Kharel back to the Special Court for fresh hearings again, according to the news posted on Thehimalayantimes.com.
