High Price of Potato

Issue 40, October 4, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter In Kathmandu

On September 28, 2009, the state-run Radio Nepal in its 7:00 AM morning news has reported that the Thankot Police Check-post has seized two truckloads of potatoes because the price of potato is Rs 9 whereas the Kathmandu market price of potato is Rs 40. So, the Police have charged tax on the potato to tally its price with the price of potato in the Kathmandu market.

First, it has clearly indicated that the Police have linked with the potato mafia that has been keeping the price of potato unusually high, the Madhav government has been closing eyes on the criminal acts of the police as the government has a link with the potato mafia and also has been financially benefiting from it.

Second, the government has not imposed any tax on the agricultural products, potato is one of the agricultural products, and the government cannot levy any tax on anything without the parliament passing it, and the Police have no authority to collect any taxes on anything, hence the police levying unauthorized tax on potato have not only abused the power but also committed crime.

Third, this potato scandal has clearly indicated that the Madhav government has a similar link with other mafia that has been keeping the prices of other foodstuff high otherwise the measures the government has taken to control the sky high prices of foodstuff would have been successful.

The Girija government had similarly troubled the consumers causing the scarcity of petroleum products from 2006 to 2007 selling Nepal-bound petroleum products in India for making money because at that time the prices of petroleum products in India are higher than the prices set by the Government of Nepal.
