Issue 17, April 22, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

April 17, 2012: After two-day sitting at the Hattiban Resort, Nepalese leaders have been relaxed and have created hope in the minds of Nepalis that they would complete the writing of a new constitution. Leaders of four power centers such as UCPN-Maoist, NC, CPN-UML and UDMF have stated that they are very close to reaching a common understanding on the disputed issues concerning a new constitution. However, they have not reached an agreement on anything so far.

The Constitutional Committee responsible for drafting a new constitution has given the leaders five more days to build a consensus on the disputed issues concerning a new constitution. Political leaders have to complete their discussions and come to a common understanding on those disputed issues by April 23, 2012.

India, US, and Japan have welcomed the fresh positive political development in Nepal. All of these countries hope that Nepalese leaders would ultimately build a consensus on the disputed issues, and assured the Nepalese leaders of providing them with necessary assistance.

The US Government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) has selected Nepal to develop a threshold program citing the recent landmark agreement on the Comprehensive Peace Accord, according to a press statement issued by the US Embassy in Kathmandu on Monday, April 16, 2012, nepalnews.com reports. The embassy has said that the MCC’s decision is to recognize the progress Nepal has made to advance peace and prosperity for its people.

“We look forward to the government’s leadership in working with MCC and the Embassy in designing a threshold program that will continue to advance the government’s efforts to create a democratic state focused on meeting the needs of the citizens of Nepal,” says the Embassy in a press statement.
