Caretaker Prime Minister Khanal Covers Up His Incompetence

Issue 34, August 21, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 16, 2011: Former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal had held the election to a new prime minister hostage for eight months after the resignation of his predecessor demanding to form a consensus government.

Then, he became a prime minister standing on the shoulders of the UCPN-Maoist lawmakers rather than attempting to build a consensus on a new government.

Thereafter, he promised to build a consensus government until the expiry date of the Constituent Assembly (CA) but he could not do so and accepted the five-point deal for extending the term of the CA for three months accepting to quit the office for a consensus government.

However, he refused to follow the five-point deal and stayed on to power provoking the NC lawmakers to take the House hostage demanding his resignation for two weeks. After two weeks he gave in to the demand of the NC lawmakers and quit the office accusing the UCPN-Maoist and the NC of not providing him with support for his efforts on building a consensus on completing the peace process and the constitution writing.

Mr. Khanal has proved that he is just another incompetent politician happened to be a prime minister taking the advantage of the current confused political situation. He is very smart to blame others for his incompetence.

Accepting the resignation of Mr. Khanal, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav has given the political leaders a week time for forming a consensus government by August 21, 2011 following the Article 38(1) of the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007.

After the expiry of the deadline for forming a consensus government, then the president will ask the parliament to elect a new prime minister based on the majority votes following the Article 38(2) of the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007.
