Caste-based and gender-based Discrimination In Nepal

November 26, 2010: in a statement, National Dalit Commission (NDC), National Women Commission of Nepal (NWC) and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal (OHCHR-Nepal) have jointly urged the government to ensure access of the victims of caste-based discrimination and gender-based violence to justice after they received reports on such discrimination and violence during a joint mission in Siraha, myrepublica.com and nepalnews.com write on November 25, 2010. Many incidents of caste-based discrimination and gender-based violence in Siraha do not reach the authorities, as they are resolved locally; some lawyers and human rights defenders have received threats when they try to take up those issues, so, they have urged the government to act immediately to ensure access of the victims of these serious human rights violence to justice.

A team consisting of eight members of the three organizations including the Chairperson of NDC Bijul Kumar Bishwokarma, the Commissioner of NWC Manju Kumari Yadav, and the Head of Biratnagar Field Office of OHCHR-Nepal Patrick Rooney have completed the joint fact finding mission to Siraha this week. The mission team has met with human rights defenders (HRDs) including women human rights defenders (WHRDs), the families of victims, Nepal Bar Association, members of civil society, government authorities including Nepal police of the Siraha district, nepalnews.com writes.
