Issue 24, June 14, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On June 8, 2009, the state-run Radio Nepal in its 7:00 A. M. morning news has stated that the Bara Survey Office of the Government of Nepal acting on the instructions of the Central Office of the Survey Department has found that India has encroached on the 30 Bighas (One Bigha=506 square meters) of the Nepalese territory. The Local survey Office also has complained that the Local Administration does not consult the local survey office when it sends a team to inspect the border areas.

Newly appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs Sujata Koirala has said that there has been no Indian encroachment on the Nepalese territory, and no displacement of Nepalis from the area. Thus, she has sold herself to Indian Ambassador Rakesh Sood simply repeating the statement of the Indian Embassy n Kathmandu.

Indian Ambassador Rakesh Sood also has said that the members of parliament stating the encroachment on the Nepalese territory have made irresponsible remarks on June 5, 2009. So, members of parliament have demanded the Government of Nepal to send Indian envoy Rakesh Sood back to India for his undiplomatic remarks.

The parliamentary committee on International Relations and Human Rights Committee headed by Padma Lal Biswokarma on Saturday, June 6, 2009 have decided to send its 11-member parliamentary delegation to the Dang district for a field study on encroachment on the Nepalese territory following the complaint.

On Sunday, June 7, 2009, the National Interest Preservation Committee (NIPC) of the Constituent Assembly (CA) also has decided to send its team to inspect the areas encroached by India and ascertain the facts and figures. UCPN-Maoist central leader Amik Sherchan will lead the team and visit 22-border points from Koilabas of Dang district to Kusuma of Banke district and prepare a report on the encroachment on the Nepalese territory. The team will leave Kathmandu for a five-day visit on Monday, June 8, 2009.
