September 8, 2012: President of Gurkha Army Ex-servicemen’s Organization (GAESO) Padam Bahadur Gurung has said that his organization was going to disclose the names of British Gurkhas fell in various wars including the first and second world wars, and build a memorial to them.

The total number of British Gurkha soldiers that fell in various wars is about 60,000 according to President Gurung. Before laying the foundation stone of a monument to the dead soldiers at Phedi Khola VDC of Syangja district in Nepal, GAESO will perform death rituals to all the dead soldiers following the respective tradition of the death rituals to the dead soldiers belonging to 14 different ethnic groups.

Gurung said, “In addition to Gurkha soldiers, thousands of Nepali people were used by the British Empire as human shields in the first and second World Wars. The British government has never divulged the details about those Nepalis killed in the wars as it fears that it might be forced to spend a huge amount of money as compensation to the families of the dead.” “Those Gurkha soldiers who were killed or went missing in various wars belong to all ethnicities,” said Gurung. “We will consult priests of all castes and communities to perform the collective final rites,” myrepublica.com quotes Gurung as saying.
