Nepal Bar Association Threatened To Launch Protest

On September 1, 2009, members of Nepal Bar Association has announced that they would launch a protest against the constitution if the proposal for giving power of hiring and firing of justices and interpreting the constitutional clauses and other laws to the legislature is included as passed by the Constitutional Committee on Judiciary in a new constitution, as it goes against the global judicial principles. The Constitutional Committee on Judiciary has passed the proposal by a simple majority. Members of the Constitutional Committee on Judiciary belonging to the United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist and other small parties voted for it while the members belonging to the Nepali Congress and Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist and Leninist have voted against it.
