By KTM Metro Reporter

April 18, 2014: The prime minister and members of the cabinet from now onwards would not have snacks at the State cost while attending cabinet and other meetings. The decision was made after Prime Minister Sushil Koirala urged the cabinet members to adopt austerity in the government. Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bamdev Gautam said "There will be no expenses on snacks in meetings, discussions and cabinet meetings with ministers by the prime minister." This will save Rs. 80 million to Rs. 100 million of the state coffer. Please come in meetings after tea and breakfast in the morning from residence and there will be only tea and biscuits in the meetings in afternoon and evening, DPM Gautam quoted PM Koirala as saying. It has already been implemented, said Gautam, according to the news posted on gorkhapatraonline.com, April 15, 2014.

During the Panchayat period of 30 years, the government used to spend huge amounts of taxpayers’ money on the winter visit of the then king Birendra to the far western region. He used to spend a whole winter month visiting different parts of the far Western Northern hills and mountains of the far west at the cost of the common folks. His father Mahendra visited Pokhara and the western region during his reign at the cost of the nation. He even built a small palace at the Phewa lakeside in Pokhara in his queen’s name.

During the Rana regime, the families of Rana prime ministers had consumed every paisa of the State revenue for their luxurious lives. They had ruled the people at gunpoint. Anybody speaking anything against the Rana for their autocracies got killed without any judicial proceedings. In fact, Ranas were both the executive and judiciary. They were in power for 104 years.
