Shortage Of Petroleum Products Benefit Prime Minister And His Clique

Issue 21, May 22, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

May 17, 2011: the government headed by Jhalanath Khanal has repeatedly said that the shortage of petroleum products will ease soon but that has not happened so far. Nepalis have to stay on in a long line for a few liters of gasoline. However, anybody willing pay Rs 150 per liter can get it easily in the parallel market. The price set by the government is Rs 93 per liter.

Nepalis believe that Mr. Khanal and his deputy Mr. Adhikari have been reaping the harvest of the shortage of petroleum products as they can sell it at almost the twice its price they have set. This is the easiest way of making money former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala had followed during the two-year office of interim prime minister from 2006 to 2008.

As long as these criminals rule the country with impunity, Nepalis will never have the easy lives; they would need to suffer from the short supply of petroleum products, electricity and water: the three basic public utilities the government is supposed to provide the people without interruption.

Nepalese consumer activists have disclosed that the state-run company called Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has been providing the government officials and politicians with gasoline gratis. Consumer activists claimed that the NOC could save Rs. 80 billion if the government stops irregularities in the supply of petroleum products.
