Prime Minister’s Press Conference

On May 6, 2009, Prime Minister and Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda held a press conference at the office of the parliamentary party of the UCPN-Maoist at Singhadarbar, Kathmandu to clear up the confusion brought by the file videotape repeatedly run by the private TVs since last few days.

First, Prime Minister Prachanda read out a written note he has prepared concerning the current political situation and then he took the questions from the national and international reporters. He replied the questions in the language a reporter has asked him in three languages: Nepali, Hindi and English.

Concerning the number of the People’s Liberation Army stated in the file videotape, he has said that the PLA is made of three stages such as central regular army and then regional regular army and militia, the total number of all these army exceeds one hundred thousands; in the video he was talking about only one of the three armies. He also said that the continuous replaying of the videotape has benefited none but the Maoists.

He has said that he has discussion with Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal in the morning concerning the unconstitutional act of the president; and he has said to the Chairman first to rectify the unconstitutional act of the president and then only form a government.

Concerning the obstruction of the parliamentary session, he has said that the so-called parliamentary parties have taught the Maoists to do so, and said, “none of you have shown concerned with the obstruction of the parliamentary sessions for so many days but you are making noises when the Maoist parliamentary members blocked the session for a day.”

He also has said that his party is committed to the peace process and writing a constitution and believe in the peaceful movement; concerning the news about the Maoist leader in the Ramechap district has ordered the NC and CPN-UML leaders and cadres to leave the district within five days, he has said that he called the concerned Maoist leader and told him that it is what the reactionary forces are wishing for to bring a conflict again; so he ordered the concerned person to stop such thing.
