Celebrating ‘Yeomari Punhi’, And ‘Jyapu Day’

Issue 51, December 22, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 18, 2013: the Nevah community celebrates the full moon day of the Mangisir (November-December) as ‘yeomarhi punhi’ every year. Currently the Nevah farmer community has started off celebrating the ‘jyapu day’ on this day.

Yeomarhi means favorite bread. The Nevah community cooks ‘yeomarhi’ from the newly harvested rice crop on the full moon day of the Mangisir, and honors the god of harvest called ‘Annapurna.’ Thereafter, they use the new rice crop for food.

‘Yomari’ is the special bread the Nevah community offers to the children at the even birthdays starting from the two year to 12 years. It is the part of the birthday celebration. The Nevah community also offers to the daughters at the time of feeding ‘dhaubaji’ means baby shower in the western term.

Yeomarhi is made of the rice flour dough shaping it by hands, and making hollow body in which the paste made of sesame seeds and raw sugar is poured in, and then sealed it at the bottom, and steam it before serving.
