Marking World Press Freedom Day Today In Nepal
By KTM Metro Reporter
May 3, 2013: Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) held a rally to mark the World Press Freedom Day in Kathmandu today according to the RSS news posted on THT ONLINE.
The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 as the World Press Freedom Day in December 1993 following the recommendation of UNESCO's general conference. However, Nepalese journalists have started off marking the day in Nepal since 1997.
The day is used as an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under the Article 19 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
However, journalists have been facing the wrath of both the government and the political parties. Some of the journalists have been the victims of either the government or of the political cadres. Some journalists have lost their lives for sincerely performing their duties.
Freedom of press and independence of media have been set up in Nepal. Nepal has more than 300 private FM radios. Every district has private FM radios. A number of private TVs have been working in Nepal. Similarly, a number of newspapers including English language newspapers have been publishing in Nepal.
Some newspapers have apparently not being so serious. Consequently, the news and views they present to the public have been unfortunately sometimes way beyond the truth. So, we have to wait the state news agency and the newspapers to confirm some news published by the private newspapers.
